i have to agree with Fark. somehow i think that there attempt to save Rikk saved the football player by accident. it could have something to do with the neural stunner that was on him at the time of the attempted transfer.
Oh, Hilda. There’s still a few possible cures you guys haven’t even mentioned yet (Animal’s blood, clever use of the 23-sider die or of Narbon’s protoype for the God-Machine, cloning Rikk _and_ mind-switching with his clone, etc.) but that has been discussed at length before. I just want to point of out that you can get back at Feddyg without giving up on Rikk (ooor better yet: You can get back at Feddyg _by_ saving Rikk and going all neener-neener on Feddyg)
And yes, maybe the brain-dead athlete is to one who recovered much to the astonishment of both Jared and Will
The idea of the experiment was that, since the guy is braindead, it would essentially be an one way-street, instead of the usual switching. Rikk would get a new body, the guy would stay “asleep” in his new, dying, mullet-bearing body.
If the footballer guy was indeed “cured” (resurrected?) by the shock, wouldn’t the swap work normally and he’d wake up in Rikk’s body?
I believe the unseen audience in the last panel *is* Rikk. Will was hesitating, seeking words to say Rikk can’t be cured. Jared’s terse, brooks-no-argument “cured” is stolen moments for Rikk (or his wives, or Gen 2, or all of the above who don’t know better.) But why? Certainly not because Jared thinks Rikk can’t handle the truth, so… is he playing long game? trying to draw out a betrayer on the team or among the visitors from the future with coldly executed dishonesty? And if so, might that not also be regarded as a betrayal? (Though I don’t think this is *the* betrayal foreshadowed.)
I’d have agreed with Anshelm were it not for Jared’s upturned eyebrows, which, similar to Will’s, indicate disbelief and surprise. Were Jared lying, and cutting off Will’s words to due so, I would expect horizontal eyebrows, or even slightly downturned ones, which would suggest a more forceful tone in his voice.
I agree with FarkUp that the unseen audience who’s been “cured” has to be the footballer – which I reckon is what Rikk planned.
He let the body-swap process get partway through, and then deliberately broke the connection by ripping away the connection, in the hopes that the “neurological re-alignment” fitzy was talking about would have happened and fixed the footballer, prior to the body-swap.
Alternatively, it’ll be that outcome but unintentional, and Rikk’ll see it as God giving him a kick in the backside and showing that his “selfish” decision to “take the easy way out” and take the braindead guy’s body (and care for his unborn child…) was the wrong one and he should carry on putting the rest of the world before himself.
My money might actually be on the latter version; intentionally sacrificing the mind-switch to save someone else would be very Rikk, but would let him feel good about something in a very lets-all-kick-Rikk storyline; if it was an accident, Rikk gets to feel guilty about having “given in”, and STILL be stuck in a dying body,with the guilt making him reluctant to “give in” again and try any of the other tech-options rather than “going along with God’s plan”…
What caused the zappity-zappity, I don’t know, but my money’s on the sheer amount of damage to the footballer’s brain being *just nearly* too much for Fitzy’s machine to cope with.
I find it odd that no one’s mentioned this yet, but it seems Shanna has been keeping an eye out for the “betrayal” just as much as some of us have been. Rather than taking Hilda at her word, she assumes that Hilda’s manipulating them to kill Feddyg because he hurt her.
If she kills Feddyg, I will be somewhat upset. That would leave us stuck with the Coo-coo for Cocoa Puffs Invaders. And, as much as I like Crosshatch Man and Mumm-ra the Everliving Bell-boy, I really prefer Keith as a villain. I mean, at least he could be a supporting villain, if nothing else?
Keep in mind, I used to hate Feddyg. Still don’t like his motivation OR his first appearances. But he definitely makes a strong villain for the team to fight, and I don’t mean strong in the sense of magic. He bounces off each team-member nicely, bringing out only the best in them. So far, I have yet to see anything in the cuckoos that promises similar depth.

Have to keep in mind, that Rikk has this Divine Mojo on him, that may have interfered with the mind swap, thus preventing it from functioning.
However the resulting energy blast may have “healed” the done damage.

Neurons function in part through electricity, and said energy blast had all the hallmarks of being electrical in nature.
